Dublinia Museum

Unmissable, the Dublinia Museum is the perfect place to learn about the city’s medieval history. A favorite among tourists for its striking cultural offering, the site benefits from a neo-Gothic style that instantly sets the tone. Just like Christ Church Cathedral to which it is connected by an archway, the building once belonged to the Church of Ireland from 1875 to 1983, under the name of Synod Hall. If you’re wondering, a synod is an assembly of clergy members gathered to debate and make decisions. On the wooden beams of the second floor, you can still see the words Aye and Nae engraved. As you’ve cleverly guessed, they mean “Yes” and “No”, simplifying large-scale voting. Fun fact: in the 1980s, the former Synod Hall used to be a famous nightclub called the Cathedral Club, where bands such as The Smiths, The Pogues, The Dubliners, and many more performed! In 1991, the Medieval Trust, an organisation dedicated to promoting medieval and Viking history, took over the site. Today, Dublinia offers an interactive paid exhibition that takes visitors back to the time of Viking invasions, but also to when knights and lords existed. From everyday life scenes to period costumes, everything has been carefully designed to ensure an immersive historical experience. A fascinating journey through time that is well worth to be paid for! The tour also allows you to climb the 96 steps up to the top of St. Michael’s Tower, offering one of the most beautiful views of the city.
