Welcome to Dole! This medieval city of Art and History and former capital of the County of Burgundy is a must-see in the Jura department. Its charming old town, steeped in history, is truly worth a visit. This peaceful little city you’re about to discover is actually nicknamed the “Little Venice of the Jura.” Dole is an often overlooked gem with medieval houses, Renaissance mansions, an impressive collegiate church, and mouth-watering cuisine. It’s the perfect starting point for exploring the charming Jura department. Join us on a journey to the birthplace of the famous Louis Pasteur, who developed the first rabies vaccine. Off we go!

    This is where the Rhône-Rhine Canal ends, flowing into the Doubs River, which gave its name to the department bordering the Jura. It is the main tributary of the Saône.     This beautiful theater is the cultural hub of the city. Built between 1840 and 1843, it boasts an Italian-style auditorium and an elegant, imposing neo-classical architecture.     Check out the façade of the Jesuit Chapel of Dole. It is part of the Collège de l'Arc, which was a complex of educational institutions housed in buildings long occupied by the Jesuits.     This lovely square, so typical of Dole, is the heart of the city's historic center. From here, you can enjoy views of the medieval alleys that weave through the city, as well as of the Fontaine à l'Enfant, that is, the Fountain with the Child, designed by François Rosset in 1805. Read more

    You're now strolling past Dole's Covered Market. This building was constructed in 1883 to replace the town's former Parliament, which had stood here since 1422.     Dominating the city skyline at 73 meters, the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame is the most impressive building in the former capital of the Jura region. Built in the 16th century, it sports two different architectural styles: Gothic and Renaissance. Read more

    Come meet the famous Louis Pasteur, the French scientist, chemist and physicist who developed the rabies vaccine in 1885.     Take a look at the house on your right. It's a beautiful optical illusion! Artists from the Haut les Murs Collective painted this fresco back in 2017. It's right in the heart of the city and depicts some of Dole's most famous historical figures. Read more

Roman Bridge

To round off your visit to Dole, I suggest a walk on the other side of the Passerelle des Poètes, the Poets’ Footbridge, where you’ll discover the impressive remains of a Romanesque bridge. Dating back to the 13th century, it once boasted 17 arches that allowed you to cross the Doubs. Just a few meters away, you’ll also see the Commanderie, a spectacular auditorium whose modern architecture is sure to stun you.

Chaux Forest

For those wishing to escape to nature, there’s nothing better than a stroll through one of France’s largest forests! The Chaux Forest offers a wide range of hiking trails for all skill levels to discover the region’s natural beauty.

 

Saltworks

The Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans and the Great Saltworks of Salins-les-Bains near Dole are also worth a visit. Both are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Royal Saltworks was commissioned by King Louis XV at the end of the 18th century. The Great Saltworks is one of the oldest in the country.

 

Nearby villages

For those who wish to go further afield, there are many towns and villages to visit in the area. Besançon and Dijon are a 50-minute drive away. The villages of Pesmes and Château-Chalon are listed among France’s Most Beautiful Villages, and Nuits-Saint-Georges and Arbois are also well worth a visit!
