Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Dijon, Capital of Burgundy

On your right is one of the most prestigious private mansions of the 18th century. Built for Etienne Bouhier, a councillor in the Burgundy Parliament, this mansion with its roof typical of the region blends the styles of the Italian Renaissance and the classicism that was beginning to emerge in the architectural traditions of the time. Etienne Bouhier built this magnificent residence, which stands out from the surrounding houses, to demonstrate his power and importance in the development of Burgundy wines. The gilded roof set with green and red motifs is truly characteristic of Burgundy: it can be found on many buildings in the region. Known as ” glazed roofs “, they are made of polychrome glazed flat tiles, which generally reveal diamond-shaped designs in red and green on a golden background. A true hallamark of the region, they are created using a glazing technique that was already used in Roman times to decorate pottery. Burgundy has been making them since the Middle Ages. The town house you see before you is a fine example. A symbol of prestige and power, they were used to show off the grandeur and wealth of their owners, who undoubtedly belonged to the great Burgundian bourgeoisie.
