The covered market

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Dijon, Capital of Burgundy
What better way to soak up Dijon life than sampling its culinary specialities? Of course, these include mustard, , but also snails, gingerbread, crème de cassis, a black current liquieur and cooked dishes such as Gaston Gérard-style chicken or the famous beef bourguignon. You’ll find all these fresh products in these halls, built between 1873 and 1875 and inspired by the Eiffel buildings. The architecture is classical in style, and the large arches feature animal motifs representing moufflons, roe deer, oxen and wild boar – in short, everything associated with Dijon’s gastronomy. It’s a rather original building, but one that makes it easy to wander the market aisles in search of the best local produce! The covered market is open on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings, with more than 240 shops in its 4,400 m² area. The entrance facing you features the town’s coat of arms at the top, as well as medallions of Ceres, goddess of harvest, on the left, and Hermes, god of trade and commerce, on the right.
