Saint-Michel church

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Dijon, Capital of Burgundy
It took over 150 years to build this sumptuous church. As a result, it boasts a blend of two different architectural styles: the Gothic style, seen in the vaults of the nave, and Italian Renaissance art, visible in the lantern towers that adorn its facade. Today, it represents the expression of this major artistic transition in history, making it a unique place of worship in France. In fact, it is one of the most beautiful churches in France. The facade bears witness to these two styles: the portal on the right is Gothic, while the central and left portals are Renaissance. Look at the sculptures beneath the portals, and you’ll notice that there is a difference depending on the period in which they were built, even between the two Renaissance portals. Built in the 16th century in order to accommodate the growing number of worshippers in the town, Saint-Michel church replaced a former chapel that had stood there since 889. It was consecrated in 1529, although it was still unfinished at the time. During the French Revolution, the church was looted and its furnishings broken. Fortunately, it regained its splendour after the revolutionary wars, and today stands as a true testament to the history of Dijon. Feel free to go inside to see the beautiful interior decorations, the paintings and the magnificent stained glass windows.
