Liberty Street

13 rue de la liberte poi grand

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Dijon, Capital of Burgundy

This is Dijon’s main shopping street. Dating from the 15th to 18th centuries, it is lined with listed buildings. It links Liberation square to Darcy square, and features a wide range of shops to the delight of the people of Dijon. Formerly known as Condé Street, it was renamed Liberté Street after the French Revolution. It became pedestrianised in 2012, which rapidly increased its number of visitors over the following years. On your left, you can see the house known as Maison aux trois visages, a superb half-timbered house with three adjoining gables. It dates back to the 15th century and was inhabited by Carthusian monks. It is obviously listed as a Historic Monument. The building facing you on the left, with its remarkable corner turret, is a former 17th-century hotel called Millière Hotel. It is also a listed building. To the right is another fine Art Deco building: look up and you’ll notice the inscription “Au pauvre diable” meaning “To the poor devil” engraved on it. This was the name of a former department store that stood here until 1999. In the next building one could find the Magasins Modernes, now Galeries Lafayette. In Dijon, this intersection between Bossuet and Liberté streets is known as Coin du miroir, mirror corner, in reference to a former hotel that was part of Notre-Dame du Miroir abbey, which was demolished in the 18th century. A historic place, but also ideal for a little shopping trip in the heart of Dijon!
