Grangier Square

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Dijon, Capital of Burgundy
Laid out in 1911, Grangier square offers a superb view of the Hôtel des Postes, built in 1907 in Louis XVI style on the site where the Dijon castle once stood. It was designed by architect Louis Perreau. It features a clock at the corner surrounded by sculptures by Dijon sculptor Paul Gasq. Hôtel des Postes, now known as Postes Grangier, houses the post office and a number of shops since its renovation in 2013. The building to its right is known as the Modern Style building. Its Art Nouveau architectural style sharply contrasts with that of its neighbour. However, they were built by the same architect at the same time. The two facades of the building, one facing rue du Château and the other rue du Temple, are completely identical and are linked by the small facade facing the square. The roof of this facade is decorated with sculptures of grape leaves and bunches of grapes. Situated a few metres from the city centre, Hôtel des Postes and the building next to it are of particular interest for the elegance of their architecture. The square itself was named in honour of Henri Grangier and his wife Sophie, who were great benefactors of the town in the late 19th century. As you continue along the square, on your left you will come across a very special sculpture called The Time Counter. It depicts a sphere, with clocks on either side showing the time in major cities around the world. At the top is a man sitting on the sphere, telling the time in Dijon. Installed in 2020, it will contibute in making Grangier square one of the most interesting in the city!
