Berbis mansion

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Dijon, Capital of Burgundy
Built between 1552 and 1558 for Philibert Berbis, a councillor at the Dijon Parliament, this house, with its remarkable watchtower, is a private mansion. This Parliament succeeded the Parliament of Burgundy, established by Duke Philippe the Bold, in Beaune. When the Duchy of Burgundy became part of France in 1477, King Louis XI transferred the Parliament to Dijon, as the inhabitants of Beaune had turned against him. The members of parliament shared the governance of the province with the governor, who referred all major decisions to them. The Parliament dealt with any disputes that arose, as well as issues relating to coinage, finance, police and fortifications. Berbis mansion was one of the first parliamentary mansions built in the town. Above its entrance is a statue of Saint-Eloi, goldsmith and bishop of Noyon in the 7th century. Thanks to its beautiful Renaissance style and rich history, it was listed as a Historic Monument in 1956.
