ESTRAN City of the sea

Dieppe is one of the most beautiful seaside resorts on the Côte d’Albâtre with its seaside baths, beaches and harbour. Consequently, it’s a must-see destination for all sea lovers. If you’re one of them, then you’ll certainly enjoy visiting the attraction in front of you. Located between the invigorating air of the seaside and the hustle and bustle of the port of Dieppe, the ESTRAN Cité de la mer is an eco-museum launched in June 1993 by the association bearing the same name, whose acronym stands for Espace Scientifique et Technique des Ressources Aquatiques et de la Navigation (Scientific and Technical Space for Aquatic Resources and Navigation). The more experienced will obviously agree that the foreshore is the part of the coastline periodically covered by tides. This association is open to the general public all year round, and is dedicated to the coastline of Upper Normandy. Its goal is to promote the scientific and technical culture of marine life and fishing. In other words, it aims to highlight the richness of the seabed, man’s use of the sea over the course of history and current environmental issues. To achieve this goal, the museum has a 1,600 m² exhibition space, divided into several thematic areas, including fishing industry techniques, the development of shipbuilding, the coastal environment and the fauna of the Channel. Visitors can also learn about the drakkar, the famous Viking boat with square sails and oars. Not to mention an insight into the functioning of a trawler engine, a herring kiln and a dredger, a device used to catch shellfish such as clams and scallops. Remember, you’re in Dieppe, France’s leading shellfish port and a flagship town for herring fishing! A special highlight of the visit are the two aquariums, where fish from the English Channel parade before your very eyes, and where stingrays can be gently stroked.
