Market Square

Let’s pause for a moment at Market Square to take in its architecture, and to talk a little about Normandy’s gastronomy. In 1923, architect Georges Madeline built two half-timbered halls here, topped with tiled roofs and inspired by traditional Norman style. With the look of old village houses, they give the center of Deauville a picturesque charm, like an open-air covered market. Since their inauguration, they’ve remained the town’s gourmet gathering spot.
Here, Normandy’s flavors are on full display. It’s the perfect place to sample the region’s great cheeses: raw-milk Camembert de Normandie, square and creamy Pont-l’Évêque, strong-flavored Livarot, and the heart-shaped Neufchâtel. Alongside them, Isigny butter and cream shine as dairy treasures known the world over. And of course, the apple is king here, its ambassadors include Pays d’Auge cider, sparkling perry, pommeau, and calvados.
For those with a sweet tooth, there are plenty of delights: teurgoule, a cinnamon-scented rice pudding; fallue, a rich brioche; Isigny caramels; and the classic Normandy apple tart. Whatever the season, the market stalls showcase this culinary heritage in abundance, so go on, treat yourself!
