Rosenborg Castle

02 chateau de rosenborg poi grand

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Copenhagen, A Scandinavian jewel

Commissioned by King Christian IV of Denmark, Rosenborg Castle was originally supposed to be a holiday house. Completed 30 years later, it soon became the King’s favourite; he even spent his final days here. An official residence, the Royal Family will start living here in 1633 before moving to Fredensborg Palace in 1710. For your information, Denmark is still a constitutional monarchy to this day, meaning that it has a king and queen. The Royal family lives in Fredensborg Palace in winter then moves to Amalienborg Palace for the summer. Though no one lives here right now, the furniture and decor indicate that royalty has resided here from the 17th to the 18th century. Visiting this castle will transport you a few centuries back, recounting Copenhagen’s past. Inside, you’ll find the Crown’s jewels, the Knight’s Hall and its coronation chair, and a porcelain collection. One of the castle’s towers hides one of the most beautiful Venetian glass collections in the world! You’ll probably agree, but the interior is just as impressive as the exterior! It takes on a Dutch and Flemish Renaissance style, like many other Danish buildings at the time. This palace is unique, for it has been exempt of damage during its whole existence, explaining why it looks so well-preserved today. Only a few changes were made when kings lived here, wishing to personalise their living quarters. Once the castle was no longer inhabited by the Royal family, it opened to the public in 1833. Great news for tourists!
