Here we are in the city’s most charming neighbourhood! Don’t be surprised if you’ve already seen a postcard of this place before. Quite understandable when witnessing all these quaint colourful houses, crossed by Nyhavn canal with quays and wooden boats. What a view! This district was established by King Christian V in the 17th century. Its canal was built to facilitate merchandise transport from the sea to the city centre. “Nyhavn” means “new port” in English, so it’s safe to say that this area was home to numerous sailors! Most buildings around you used to be brothels or bars, today, restaurants and cafés have replaced them and tourists absolutely love to come and wander around this charming neighbourhood! Did you know that some of the houses here are very old? For example, the n°9 over there dates back from 1661! Upon the canal’s completion, inhabitants were allowed to build their homes along the water. For instance, famous writer Hans Christian Andersen lived here in the 19th century. If his name doesn’t ring a bell, he’s the one who wrote The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling! Imagine him walking along here more than 200 years ago, going back home to n°20 where he wrote many of his greatest books. Besides its charming qualities, this historical district is the perfect spot to either have a drink or try out some local specialities! If you’re up to it, a small boat tour is also a great way to discover this incredible area from a new angle!
