Højbro Plads

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Copenhagen, A Scandinavian jewel
Højbro Plads is one of Copenhagen’s main squares. Established after the 1795 fire, it was built to stop future fires from starting or propagating, indeed, the city has known many fires in the past. Moreover, it also serves as an aeration system in the city centre—a place where residents can meet up and gather on this big vast square. Quite a change from the city’s narrow medieval streets, huh? Surrounded by many neo-classical buildings, Højbro Plads is a busy square. In the middle, there’s an equestrian statue of Absalon, a Danish bishop and founder of Copenhagen, formerly named Hafnia.
