Frederik’s Church

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Copenhagen, A Scandinavian jewel
You are now standing in front of the “Marble Church”. Don’t worry, it’s not fully made of marble…though it was originally planned that way when construction began in 1749! However, the death of the architect, just five years after construction began, interrupted the project. A new architect, a Frenchman this time, was appointed by the king to continue the work, but then the king died before construction could resume. The project met a chain of unfortunate events as there were no longer a King nor an architect, but also a lack of funds. Construction started again only 150 years later, thanks to Danish architect Ferdinand Meldahl. Originally supposed to design a Rococo church, he finally decided to make a Baroque building, the Frederik’s Church. What’s most impressive is its dome, reminiscent of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome with its blue appearance and considerable size. In fact, it’s the biggest dome in all Scandinavia! You can either go ontop to get a nice view of Copenhagen, or admire the beautiful paintings depicted on this marble copula!
