Fish Market Quay

09 quai de la poissonnerie poi grand

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Colmar, On the road to Alsace

You’ve made your way from Rue de la Poissonnerie, the Fish Market Street, to the Quai de la Poissonnerie, the Fish Market Quay, along the Lauch River. This is one of the most popular tourist spots in town, home to some of the most beautiful houses in Alsace. They’re just over there on your right – these colorful half-timbered houses reflected in the water. It is on this street and quay that fishermen sold their catch in the 16th century. That’s why they bear this name to this day! The neighborhood was ravaged by fire in 1706, but was restored during the 20th century, to house these beautiful buildings of yesteryear. Today, it’s a picturesque spot that’s steeped in history, perfectly capturing Colmar’s rich heritage! Don’t miss the impressive trompe-l’œil on the last building behind you. This optical illusion was created in 2002 by Edgar Mahler, a humanist artist and painter nicknamed the Maestro of Façades. He is behind a number of such works in Alsace, and a few in Switzerland. This one right here is part of the town’s artistic heritage, now making the entrance to one of Colmar’s restaurants.
