Covered Market

08 marche couvert poi grand

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Colmar, On the road to Alsace

That building of brick and steel across the Lauch River is where you’ll find all the best local goodies! It’s Colmar’s historic covered market, built in 1865 by architect Louis-Michel Boltz, who also built the city’s municipal theater a few years before. Back in the day, market gardeners would float their produce down the river on flat-bottomed boats and unload right here. Here, you’ll find the best local produce, as well as a great selection of Alsatian specialties. Where to start? There’s sauerkraut, kouglof (a brioche-like cake with raisins and almonds), gingerbread and pretzels, of course! For a more hearty meal, try the Baeckeoffe, a slow-cooked meat stew with potatoes, carrots, cabbage and onions, simmered in a white wine broth. For those who like fish, there’s the Matelote du Rhin, a fish stew with freshwater fish like perch or pike-perch, mushrooms, herbs and shallots, simmered in a white wine broth. Spaetzle is another local favorite. It’s the traditional pasta used in a wide variety of dishes. And don’t forget the cheese! Munster, a creamy cow’s milk cheese, is a must-try. To wash it all down, sip on a glass of local wine like Sylvaner, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Muscat d’Alsace, or Pinot. Always remember to drink in moderation. If you’re visiting during the holidays, scour the Christmas markets for Manneles (chocolate chip brioches in the shape of little men) and Bredeles (delicious Christmas cookies). I’m telling you, you’re in for a treat! So, what are you waiting for? Head inside and indulge!
