Collegiate Church of Saint Martin

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Colmar, On the road to Alsace
Judging by the name of the square on which it stands, one would think that this church is the Cathedral of Colmar. Well, actually, it isn’t. Not any more, at least. It became a “constitutional cathedral” during the French Revolution –a title given to churches that were aligned with the revolutionary government–, but that lasted about ten years. Today, it’s a collegiate church sporting a traditional Alsatian Gothic architecture. It dates back to the 13th century and was built in Vosges sandstone from various quarries – which explains all these different shades of colour. It’s actually the second-largest church in Alsace after that of Strasbourg Cathedral. Although the church was badly damaged during the French Revolution, the sculptures and stained glass windows in its interior are in excellent condition, dating back to the Middle Ages. Though it’s officially a collegiate church, the locals often think of it as their cathedral.
