View of the Cathedral Towers

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Clermont-Ferrand, The Black Diamond of Auvergne
You’re now on Rue des Gras — one of the most iconic streets in Clermont-Ferrand’s historic center. Lined with shops nestled in former townhouses, this street offers a stunning view of the cathedral’s two black towers, rising nearly 100 meters into the sky. It’s the perfect spot to snap one of the city’s most symbolic photos! As you walk a bit further down the street, look to your left for a building with red doors at number 34. That’s the Hôtel Fontfreyde — you’ll see the name written on the façade. It’s listed as a historic monument and dates back to the 16th century. When you reach it, walk past the front and take a left onto the small Rue Saint-Pierre to get a better look. You’ll spot a building made of Volvic stone, with a striking spiral staircase topped by a small turret. It’s a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture, still showing a few touches of its medieval roots. The building takes its name from the family it was originally built for. Today, it houses a photography center that hosts contemporary and creative exhibitions.
