Clermont-Ferrand Historic District

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Clermont-Ferrand, The Black Diamond of Auvergne
You’re now in the heart of one of Clermont-Ferrand’s two historic districts, built around the hilltop where the cathedral now stands. I say one of two because the other is Montferrand, located to the northeast of the city center. That district is known for its narrow streets and medieval buildings — reminders of the city’s past in the Middle Ages. In fact, back then — and all the way up to the 18th century — Clermont-Ferrand as we know it didn’t exist. There were two entirely separate towns: Clermont on one side, and Montferrand on the other. They were independent from each other… and more than a little competitive. The area you’re standing in now is the older of the two. These streets hold nearly 2,000 years of history, dating back to the Gallo-Roman era, when the city of Clermont was called Augustonemetum, named after Augustus, the first Roman emperor, in the 1st century BC. Montferrand, on the other hand, was founded much later — in the 12th century, by the Counts of Auvergne. It wasn’t until the reign of King Louis XV, in the 18th century, that the two towns were officially united, putting an end to the long-standing rivalry. That’s when the city became known as Clermont-Ferrand. Today, the streets, houses, and monuments of the old center still bear witness to its rich medieval past, giving the city an authentic charm that makes it one of the highlights of any visit to the Auvergne region. With an exceptional setting — nestled between two Regional Parks: the Auvergne Volcanoes and the Livradois-Forez — Clermont-Ferrand is the perfect destination for all kinds of experiences, from cultural visits to outdoor adventures.
