Looking for a green space to relax or go for a walk? Montjuzet Park is the largest park in the city. Located at nearly 500 meters above sea level, it offers peaceful natural surroundings and stunning panoramic views over Clermont-Ferrand.
Pierre Carrée Viewpoint
Want to get even higher? Head to the Pierre Carrée viewpoint in Orcines, just 5 km from the city center. This scenic spot is known for offering one of the best views of the city — especially its famous black cathedral. A small roadside parking area allows you to stop and take in the view.
L’Aventure Michelin
A must-see in Clermont-Ferrand, L’Aventure Michelin takes you into the world of the iconic brand and its mascot Bibendum. This fun and interactive museum is great for both kids and adults. Please note that entry is ticketed.
The Puy de Dôme
If you’re staying for a few days and enjoy hiking, the Puy de Dôme is within easy reach! It’s the highest volcano in the Chaîne des Puys and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering breathtaking views of the Auvergne volcanoes.
Not in the mood for hiking? Take the Panoramique des Dômes train to the summit and enjoy the scenery along the way.
Lac Chambon & Château de Murol
Looking for a flat walk by the water? Head to Lac Chambon, about 45 minutes from Clermont. You can walk around the lake in about an hour, and it has two beaches with swimming and water activities in summer.
Nearby, the village of Murol is home to the impressive Château de Murol, perched on a rocky hilltop. Entry is ticketed — check the website for more info.
Royat
Just a short distance from the city center, the village of Royat is worth a visit. Known for its spa resort, it’s a lovely place to stroll through picturesque streets. And why not try a traditional truffade, a hearty local dish beloved by food lovers?
Vulcania
About 25 minutes from Clermont, Vulcania is a one-of-a-kind theme park in the heart of the Auvergne volcanoes. It’s a science center dedicated to volcanoes and natural phenomena, offering interactive exhibits, fun activities, and educational experiences for all ages. Entry is ticketed — you can check hours and book tickets online.
Riom
Want to explore another town in the region? Visit Riom, a City of Art and History with beautiful architecture in its historic center. Riom was once the capital of Auvergne. Guided tours are available from the local tourist office.
Gergovie Plateau
A key site in Gallic history, the Gergovie Plateau is where Vercingetorix defeated Julius Caesar’s army in 52 BC. Today, the site offers a stunning view of the surrounding region. The Gergovie Museum on-site tells the story of this important battle.
The Regional Volcano Park
Clermont-Ferrand sits at the heart of the vast Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Park.
If you’re up for more hiking after the Puy de Dôme, you’ll find countless trails for all levels — from the Puy de Pariou to the Puy de la Vache, and even the Puy de Sancy for more experienced hikers.
Prefer exploring villages and heritage sites? Visit Saint-Nectaire, a beautiful historic town; Volvic, known for its water and volcanic stone; or Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, a medieval village at the foot of the Super-Besse ski resort. While you’re there, don’t miss the stunning Lac Pavin — swimming isn’t allowed, but the walk around it is well worth it.
Billom
On the other side of Clermont, the Livradois-Forez Regional Park offers more to explore — including Billom, a small town with a beautifully preserved medieval center.
Montpeyroux
Further south, toward Issoire, stop at Montpeyroux, one of the “Most Beautiful Villages of France.” This medieval village was once famous for its vineyards and winemaking tradition.
Castles of the Puy-de-Dôme
Clermont is also a great base for visiting the region’s many castles, especially to the north of the department. Don’t miss the castles of Randan, Effiat, Portabéraud, Denone, or Tournoël — each with its own charm and history.
