As magnificent as it is iconic, you’re now looking at the superb Chicago Theatre! It opened its doors in 1921, in the glittering Baroque style that would set the tone for the opening of future movie theaters across the United States. In the 1920s, theatres sought and needed to rival with the opulence and luxury of the opera. Audiences had to feel transported right from the entrance and lobby. Far, far away from the darkened halls you’re used to, 20th-century American cinemas are architectural treasures, like Lowe’s Paradise and the Roxy in New York, whose rooms are filled with sculptures and gilding worthy of the Vienna Opera. Anyway, back to our iconic Chicago Theater. For 40 years, the theater has screened world premieres and hosted the biggest names in entertainment. The huge entrance panel lived out its heyday and was covered with names from both the American and international scenes. But by the 1980s, abandoned by its patrons, the theater was gradually falling into oblivion, until it was scheduled for demolition! A group of enthusiasts, supported by the town, managed to save it. They succeeded in buying it back and renovating it. In 1986, Frank Sinatra did the honors at a grand opening ceremony. Since then, in an auditorium inspired by the Château de Versailles, you can see musicals, stand-up comedy shows, magic shows and concerts accompanied by 3,600 other people. It is protected by the Chicago Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
