On your left, you’ll find the Cadillac Palace Theater. Built in 1926, it opened as the New Palace Theatre. The interior is grandiose, inspired by the Château de Fontainebleau and the Château de Versailles. Immense decorative mirrors, marble and walls covered in gold leaf! During the war, the entire interior was repainted white to deceive the government, which requisitioned the copper to make ammunition. The decorations narrowly escaped being melted down and have since been restored to their original state. The theater had been opened as part of the Orpheum Vaudeville circuit and featured stars such as Sophie Tucker and Bob Hope among many others. But by the 1930s, interest in Vaudeville was waning and the theater was transformed into a movie theater before hosting Broadway’s biggest acts. So this is the place to come if you want to take advantage of your stay in Chicago to see a famous musical in a breathtaking setting.
