Aiguille du Midi

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Chamonix, Where Earth Touches Sky
If you continue straight down this street for about 200 meters, you’ll reach Place de l’Aiguille du Midi, the departure point of the famous cable car. You’ve been seeing its antenna since you arrived in Chamonix – now it’s high time to go see it up close! Yes, the price might seem a bit steep, but honestly the experience is absolutely worth every penny. The view from the top of Europe’s highest point accessible without effort will leave you speechless, amazed, and maybe even moved to tears. Feeling the immense beauty of the alpine expanse is indescribable. So trust us and treat yourself to this unforgettable experience — after all, you’ve come all this way, why not take it to the top? Up here, you might be surprised to find you can easily spend a whole day—or at least a good half-day—there’s just so much to see and do. The first stage takes you to Plan de l’Aiguille, sitting at about 2,300 meters. And needless to say, the views from there are already pretty amazing. You can stop, soak in the panorama, grab a drink, or even set off on a hike to Montenvers. Then comes the second section—a nearly vertical ride—that takes you all the way up to the Aiguille du Midi at 3,842 meters.
It’s a dizzying, breathtaking journey from the valley floor to the high mountain world—once a place only insiders could reach. If only the old-timers could see it now! Once at the summit, the spectacle hits you in the gut, so take your time. First, give yourself a moment to acclimatize, because unless you have Nepalese or Bolivian blood, your body probably isn’t used to such altitude. More importantly, take time to absorb everything you’re seeing with a sense of wonder. The panoramic terraces allow you to peacefully admire the mythical peaks: Mont Blanc of course, closer than ever, but also the Dôme du Goûter and its famous refuge which hosts mountaineers for their last night before climbing to the top of the Mont Blanc. You’ll also see the Aiguilles de Chamonix, Mont Maudit, Monte Rosa, Gran Paradiso… On clear days you might even have a glimps of the Matterhorn in the distance! Keep your eyes peeled – you’ll surely spot mountaineers on nearby rock faces and skiers ready to descend the legendary Vallée Blanche. The site has evolved a lot in recent years. Chamonix has invested heavily to enrich the experience. Today, you’ll find attractions, a museum, a cafeteria – plenty to take your time and not settle for just a simple round trip. A real adventure awaits you at the summit: the tube, a long steel gallery with huge windows, lets you walk around the Aiguille du Midi without retracing your steps and without missing a thing. You can also visit the world’s highest museum, which tells the story of mountaineering, discover behind-the-scenes stories of the cable car’s construction, or learn about altitude’s effects on the body at the Hypoxia station. And for a guaranteed thrill and an unbeatable photo, take a step into the void! This very popular attraction lets visitors stand in the center of a glass box suspended over the void. It takes a bit of courage and patience, but the opportunity is unique and the result stunning! Well , that’s enough from me — enjoy your visit, or continue on to see this amazing mountain sentinel up close.
