Rue basse du Château (Lower Castle Street)

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Chambéry, The historic capital of Savoy
You are now walking along the lower street of the Castle. It is the oldest street in Chambéry and was the only one leading to the castle in the 14th century. Just imagine the number of high-ranked people who have passed through here before you! An iconic figure to the old town, it is now mainly known for its aerial bridge. It is the last one still visible to this day. It’s worth knowing that in the Middle Ages, the city had a large number of such bridges. However, due to the part they played in spreading fires an edict was signed to order their destruction. Residents built them when they needed to expand their homes and bought a room in the building across the street. Convenient, but also a fire connector. This one is sometimes referred to as the Bridge of Sighs, even though it has no connection whatsoever with the famous bridge in Venice, and has become a strong symbolic image of old Chambéry. The street still retains all its charm with small designer shops and their hanging signs. On your right, Sainte-Apollonie Street is also worth exploring. It was one of the most traveled in the Middle Ages, known for its bread oven, chapel, and public baths.
