Saint-Gimer church

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Carcassonne, A Citadel among the Clouds
The church of Saint-Gimer is not nearly as old as the fortifications of the medieval city. Indeed, it was only built in 1859 by Viollet-le-Duc. This very spot was once home to a barbican, a defensive structure keeping watch over the Aude Gate and the river crossing. But during the medieval city’s restoration, the barbican was found to be in such a state of disrepair that they decided to tear it down and build a church dedicated to Saint Gimer in its place. Saint Gimer, bishop of Carcassonne between 903 and 932, was known for his charity towards the poor; in fact, he is said to have donated all his belongings to help those in need before devoting his life to religion. So they built him a church back in the 11th century, in recognition of his great generosity. The first Saint-Gimer church stood just a few meters away, at number 58 Barbacane Street, where his childhood home once stood. It was rebuilt in the 19th century to accommodate the growing neighbourhood. This is how the current edifice came to be. It sports Viollet-le-Duc’s signature Gothic style, and its interior boasts decorations from the earlier church. Yet another fine example of the work of this renowned 19th-century architect! The church was listed as a historical monument in 2022. Be sure to peek inside if it’s open during your visit.
