The Old Port of Cannes

05 le vieux port de cannes poi grand

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Cannes, The Riviera’s Red Carpet

A central landmark in the city, the Old Port is an open invitation to enjoy the sea — and the art of doing nothing. Ranked among the oldest ports of its kind on the French Riviera, it sits right at the crossroads between historic Cannes and the glitzy, modern Cannes of showbiz. Its existence is largely due to the determination of Lord Brougham, a British politician who stumbled upon Cannes by chance in 1834 — and was immediately convinced of its potential as a future seaside resort. Deeply involved in promoting this then-unknown destination, he used his influence and connections to launch a series of ambitious developments that would transform the city. Among the most impactful were the arrival of the railway and the creation of this symbolic port, nestled at the foot of Le Suquet. But while Lord Brougham helped shape the vision, it was Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, who laid the first stone of the jetty in 1898. Over time, the port has taken on a life of its own, becoming a vibrant stage for both local charm and international prestige — hosting major events like the Royal Regattas and the International Fireworks Festival.
