Tucked away in the remains of the medieval castle of the Lérins abbots since 1919, the Museum of World Explorations is one of Cannes’ true cultural landmarks. Formerly known as the Castre Museum, it owes its creation to a series of major donations, starting in the 19th century. Among the most important benefactors was Tinco Martinus Lycklama, a Dutch baron with a deep love for Cannes. He was both a cultured traveler and an avid art collector. During his many journeys, he amassed a vast personal collection of Mediterranean antiquities, as well as primitive and ethnographic art objects, all of which were eventually gifted to the city of Cannes. This already impressive collection was later enriched by major deposits from the Louvre Museum, along with donated paintings — some coming from the Rothschild family, well known for their influence in banking and finance. Today, the museum offers permanent collections and rotating temporary exhibitions, accessible with a ticket, that trace this extraordinary accumulation of artistic and cultural treasures. So… ready for a journey through time?
