Let’s be honest: in terms of architecture, the Calais Museum of Fine Arts might not be the most charming museum in France. Unlike others housed in former palaces or grand old mansions, this one stands in a large, boxy 1960s building on the edge of Richelieu Park. But don’t judge a book by its cover. Since moving into this location in 2009—a structure designed by architect Paul Pamart—the museum has embraced its modern setting. Before that, it occupied several different homes, including the old Town Hall on Place d’Armes. Sadly, that beautiful building was destroyed by German bombing in World War II, along with precious works by Van Dyck, Poussin, and Le Brun. After undergoing renovations in 2023, the museum took the opportunity to rethink its layout and update its collections. The result? Over 1,600 square meters of bright gallery space filled with nearly 250 works—paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photographs spanning from the 19th century to today. Highlights include watercolors by British artist William Turner, sculptures by Carpeaux and Rodin, as well as bold contemporary pieces by Jean Dubuffet, Annette Messager, and Ben. Works by Bourdelle, Pompon, Fautrier, and Del Mare are also featured, offering a rich and sometimes surprising mix of styles and eras. One standout is the reconstructed studio of Norman sculptor Henri Delcambre, donated by his nephew, which gives visitors an intimate look into the creative process of a past century. Between figuration and abstraction, tradition and rebellion, the Calais Museum of Fine Arts doesn’t just showcase art—it challenges you to see it differently.
