The old city walls, built by the Pisans in the 13th century, once enclosed what was the administrative heart of Cagliari.
Today, those same ramparts offer beautiful terraces and stunning views over the surrounding areas. From here, you can see the Stampace district, whose name likely comes from a medieval expression that sounds quite similar to English, “Stai in pace,” meaning “stay in peace.”
The district you’re currently standing in, Castello, was home to the nobility and clergy. The Marina, as you might expect, was dedicated to all things maritime, while Villanova was the agricultural quarter.
Stampace was the craftsmen’s neighbourhood, and you’ll still find many workshops there today. If you explore it, you’ll discover the soul of Cagliari, an authentic, unfiltered part of the city, rich in tradition and artisanal know-how.
