Torre di San Pancrazio
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Cagliari, The Sardinian treasure
As you arrive at Independence Square, you’ll see the Torre di San Pancrazio to the right of the gate. It’s the tallest tower in Cagliari and one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. It was the first defensive structure erected by the Pisans, built in 1305.
Standing 36 metres high, it was designed to spot approaching enemies from a distance. The architect, Giovanni Capula, also designed the Torre dell’Elefante and the Torre del Leone, now known as the Torre dell’Aquila.
Like its sister towers, San Pancrazio was built from Pietra Forte, a tough white limestone quarried from the hills just outside the city. The tower served a vital role in defending Cagliari against threats from Muslim powers and the rival Republic of Genoa. It also marked one of the main entrances into the citadel. From 1328 onwards, it was used as a storage facility and a military canteen for officers.
In the 17th century, it was converted into a prison, and it wasn’t until its modern restoration that the tower regained its current appearance. The wall on the old town side was removed, exposing the interior staircase. If you’re afraid of heights, this climb might feel a bit dizzying. For safety reasons, children under 12 aren’t allowed inside. If you decide to climb to the top, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular 360-degree view of Cagliari, surrounded on all sides by shimmering blue.
