The beautiful gate in front of you is called Porta Cristina. It was built in 1825 by Carlo Boyl, who drew inspiration from Porta Angelica in Rome. The gate was named in honour of Queen Maria Cristina of Bourbon, wife of King Charles Felix of Savoy, who was King of Sardinia at the time.
This elegant neoclassical structure replaced the old “Emergency Gate” from the 17th century, which was in need of a refresh. Today, it leads to the museums of the citadel, housed in the fortress’ former royal arsenal. In the 1950s, the area was transformed into a cultural space made up of several museums.
The most famous is the National Archaeological Museum, one of Italy’s finest, home to a stunning collection that traces Sardinia’s history. You’ll also find the Pinacoteca, the National Art Gallery, as well as the Siamese Art Museum, which showcases rare and beautiful works from the Far East. Finally, there’s the Wax Museum, which displays anatomical models by Clemente Susini.
Even if you don’t step inside the museums, take a stroll around the old fortress grounds. This “city within the city” is full of charm, and the view is simply wonderful from the belvedere.
