This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Cagliari, The Sardinian treasure

Just a quick word about the Municipal Auditorium. Yes, it really is a church… or at least, it used to be. This was once the Church of Santa Teresa, built in the 17th century by the Jesuits. In 1848, the church and the adjoining college became state property.

After being deconsecrated, the building housed the archives, and later became the headquarters of the Gioventù Italiana del Littorio, the Italian equivalent of the Hitler Youth. During the bombings of 1943, the church was badly damaged. It wasn’t until after the war that the space found a new purpose, as a concert hall. In the 1980s, the interior was redesigned to suit its new role as an auditorium.

During the 2000s, the new city administration of Cagliari decided to give the site a fresh boost and open it up to theatre companies. Today, the Municipal Auditorium is home to the Cagliari School of Dramatic Arts, one of the most prestigious institutions of its kind in Italy.
