Vaugueux district

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Caen, Home of William and Matilda
One glance around you is all it takes to realise that you’ve arrived in the heart of medieval Caen. The Vaugueux district is one of the city’s most iconic and popular areas! This part of the centre, which has remained unscathed since World War II, gives you the chance to admire medieval stone houses. To add to the already special atmosphere, there’s a succession of small restaurants beckoning you to stay a little longer. You will probably hear that Edith Piaf often came to this district to visit her grandparents. A commemorative plaque was almost installed to celebrate her centenary. However, the mayor objected, because Édith Piaf only came to Caen occasionally, and he felt that associating her with the city might have been a bonus for tourism, but above all it would have amounted to historical usurpation. With or without La Môme, her nickname, I encourage you to embark on this journey that takes you back to the time of the troubadours, and explore the beautiful streets that surround you.
