Saint-Sauveur church

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Caen, Home of William and Matilda
The church on your right is the enigmatic Saint-Sauveur Church, formerly known as Notre Dame de Froide-Rue. It has been a listed monument since 1889. According to popular tradition, it was founded in the 7th century by Saint-Regnobert. However, there is no trace of this first version of the church, or even of the second Romanesque building constructed in the 12th century. The one you see in front of you was built in 3 stages between the 14th and 16th centuries, giving it a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance styles. In 1791, when parishes were reorganised, Saint-Sauveur du Marché was closed and the title transferred to Notre-Dame de Froiderue. This explains why today in Caen there is Saint-Sauveur church and Saint-Sauveur le vieux church. The statue you are looking at is that of François de Malherbe. If you don’t know him, he was born in Caen in 1555 and is often considered the father of classicism in French poetry. You can greet him and continue along the Monnaie street to the left.
