Saint-Etienne-le-Vieux Church

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Caen, Home of William and Matilda
The ruins you see here is a church bearing the same name as the abbey church, but with one difference: this time it’s Saint-Etienne-le-Vieux. The church became known as “le Vieux” when the Men’s Abbey was built. One must admit that the name fits perfectly! The church which was completely abandoned during the French Revolution is one of Caen’s first churches! In fact, there was already a place of worship here in 351. You have to admit, the church has a long history! By 1850, after spending almost a century as a derelict stable, people were beginning to wonder whether it wouldn’t be better to just outrightly demolish it . Thanks to the efforts of antiquarians and historians, the municipality did not destroy it, however, it did not escape World War II’s bombings. Although this gaping wound has been staggering ever since, it’s still standing. Listed as a historic monument, it is also listed in the Topito top 10 of the most beautiful abandoned sites in France. Don’t try to enter the remains – it’s dangerous and obviously off-limits to the public. Instead, head straight to Arcisse de Caumont street to continue your tour.
