Old Saint Sauveur Church
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Caen, Home of William and Matilda
As you approach Saint Sauveur square, you come across Old Saint Sauveur Church. There are actually two churches bearing the same name. This is rather confusing, as the original church was destroyed, its name was changed, it was rebuilt and the new building was renamed after the old one! To cut a long story short. This church used to be called Saint-Sauveur du marché, because it was on the market square. It was later transformed into the covered market and its spire, which threatened to collapse, was pulled down. From 1886 to 1928, the remains of a whale that had been stranded on the beach at Langrune-sur-Mer were displayed here. It gave the place a sorte of Natural history museum thrill. It was an incredible sight, that one would have loved to witness nowadays.
