National Congress of Argentina

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Buenos Aires, The soul of Argentina
Let’s face it – the National Congress of Argentina is a sight you can’t miss. It’s gigantic! This imposing building is the center of Argentina’s political life, housing both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. In 1889, President Celman thought it a good idea to have an edifice built to rival the Legislative Palace and stand proudly alongside the Casa Rosada, housing the executive branch, and the Cabildo, the former seat of colonial administration and now a museum. Italian architect Vittorio Meano won a competition held in 1895 and undertook the construction of this gigantic building; he wanted it to be striking and symbolic, crowned by an 80-meter-high dome. So this is how this Congress building came to be. Once construction was completed, they laid out a square just out front to make it stand out even more. In 1993, the edifice was declared a “National Historical and Artistic Monument”. And the best part? There are free guided tours on offer that allow you to explore this cornerstone of Argentine politics and uncover the treasures hidden within its 39,000 square meters! Just remember to book ahead.
