This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Buenos Aires, A stroll through the city’s beautiful neighborhoods

Introducing La Isla, a hidden gem in Recoleta. This green oasis was designed in 1906 by French architect Joseph-Antoine Bouvard. You see, the city wanted to create a small green space with beautiful townhouses in line with the garden city movement. Today, there are but a few of these mansions left, but there’s always the beautiful Plaza Mitre, the square where we’ve just arrived. Here, you’ll find the statue of General Bartolomé Mitre, whom you can’t miss, scanning the horizon atop his horse. You’ve guessed it – the square’s named after him! Mitre was an Argentinian politician, military officer, historian and journalist, and founder of La Nacion newspaper, one of the most influential in the country. He also served as Mayor of Buenos Aires and then President of Argentina. He established a tax system, drafted the Civil Code and the Code of International Commerce, and worked to improve the education system.
