Faculty of Law

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Buenos Aires, A stroll through the city’s beautiful neighborhoods
This massive building, which looks more like a courthouse, is actually the Buenos Aires Law School. It’s one of thirteen faculties in the city. Argentina has one of the most advanced and progressive education systems in all of Latin America. It’s even been praised by UNESCO and UNICEF. President Sarmiento, elected in 1868, was a driving force behind education, advocating for European-style teaching and bringing in professors from the United States. A first law was then passed in 1884 under President Roca, promising free, compulsory, and secular education for all. The fortunes of Argentina’s education system have mirrored the often turbulent ups and downs of the nation’s political history, that is, with dictatorships, times of peace, and coups. Today, the country invests 6% of its GDP in education. The Buenos Aires Law School is the most popular in the city, with almost 40,000 students enrolled in one of the four courses offered. Fun fact: 16 Argentinian Presidents have graduated from this very school!
