Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit BRUSSELS, The Beating Heart of Europe

Here you are in front of the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula. This Gothic structure dates back to the 13th century and was built over the ruins of a former Romanesque church. It actually took two centuries to build this cathedral. Originally, the church was only named after St. Michael, but when the relics of Saint Gudula, the patron saint of the city, were brought here, it was given both names. It wasn’t until 1961 that it was officially elevated to cathedral rank. Like most European cathedrals, this one is a classic Gothic structure with its two massive towers. Here, instead of the large rose window you’d typically see lighting up the nave in French cathedrals, you’ll find a tall pointed arch window — a hallmark of the Brabantine style. The interior is rather plain, not necessarily by lack of funding or anything like that, but because the cathedral was looted several times, especially by French revolutionaries. What makes this cathedral even more special is that it appeals not just to those who love religious buildings, but also to nature enthusiasts—since 2004, a pair of peregrine falcons has been living at the top of the north tower. The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences has even installed cameras so you can directly watch the chicks hatch and follow the falcons’ family life. The divine bird, the egyptian god Horus, certainly picked a fitting place for its nest—and returns each year under the spotlight.
