The Groenerei Canal

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Bruges, A Gentle Journey into Flanders
Bruges is a city shaped by water, woven together by a network of canals. Here, water isn’t just part of the scenery—it’s part of the city’s soul. As you walk, listen closely to the soft and calming sound of the canals. The Groenerei, which means “Green Canal,” takes its name from a former inn and is one of Bruges’ most scenic and peaceful spots. While Bruges is a relatively recent city, with many buildings dating back about a century, the Green Canal may be one of the city’s earliest protective barriers. It began as a natural river, slowly shaped and refined over time by local workers, to supply water to the city’s mills. This peaceful waterway stretches out for about 400 metres, offering delightful and charming views in the heart of Bruges. A gentle stroll along the water’s edge is one of the most enchanting ways to end your day in Bruges. Just pause for a moment—close your eyes, take it all in, and picture yourself here at sunset, as the light turns red, yellow and orange, brushing against the city’s walls. There you are, gazing into the distance, and taking in the moment.
