This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Bruges, A Gentle Journey into Flanders

Scattered across the city like hidden gems, these clusters of whitewashed houses blend seamlessly into the urban landscape. Known as the Godshuizen, or “Houses of God,” they date back to the 14th century, when wealthy citizens and local brotherhoods laid the foundation for Bruges’ first social housing. These modest homes offered shelter to those in need—especially elderly people and widows, for whom both comfort and financial security were often out of reach. But the help didn’t stop at housing: healthcare was free, and food and clothing were also provided. In exchange for this generosity, which was meant to help the benefactors earn a place in heaven, residents were expected to pray daily in the complex’s chapel. A rather unusual kind of rent, wouldn’t you say? Today, 43 of these historic housing complexes still stand, beautifully restored along with their peaceful courtyards. They continue to house senior residents, offering a quiet, dignified place to live. These little sanctuaries are not only a living piece of history, but also some of the city’s calmest spots. So take your time, and enjoy the simple beauty of this place.
