St Stephen’s Cathedral

St Stephen’s Cathedral stands as a remarkable and rare piece of history in Brisbane. Just like most cathedrals, its construction spanned over a century, from its first stone in 1860 to its final additions in 1980. Its large dimensions, which were highly discussed in its design phase, allowed it to accommodate the growing number of worshippers, who had previously gathered in the neighbouring Pugin Chapel. In addition to its striking neo-Gothic architecture, crowned with sandstone towers, this religious building has a collection of 19th-century stained glass windows, originating from Germany, France, England, and Ireland. A touch of Europe over 15,000 kilometers away! And to wrap up with a little anecdote, St Stephen’s Cathedral’s great bell was made in the same English foundry as the famous Liberty Bell in Philadelphia and the timeless Big Ben.
