Saint-Michel Church

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Brest, Capital of the Oceans
The Saint-Michel Church was built in the 20th century, when the Saint-Martin Church could no longer accommodate the growing number of worshippers in the neighborhood. It was designed in the Gothic style and opened its doors in 1913. Over the course of its history, the church met with a number of misfortunes, including being severely damaged during World War II. It was swiftly restored after the war only to be destroyed again a few years later, following the explosion of the Ocean Liberty – a Norwegian cargo ship moored in the port of Brest. The vessel caught fire in 1947, having been loaded with ammonium nitrates. The blast shattered the church’s stained-glass windows, which were restored after the tragedy, as well as many other buildings in the city, which had already been badly hit in the war. Today, this little church adds to the charm of the neighborhood!
