Please take a moment here to admire the former Rohan Palace, built for the Archbishop of Bordeaux, Prince of Rohan, in the 18th century. during the Revolution of 1791, the palace became the headquarters of the department’s new general council and the revolutionary court. In 1800, it became an administrative centre, before Napoleon I took up residence within its walls. The former episcopal palace became imperial, then royal, then municipal. Today, the building is still home to Bordeaux’s town hall and is a listed historic monument. If you’re interested in architecture, do step inside. Behind a rather classical façade it holds one of the most beautiful staircases in France, considered to be a masterpiece of stone masonry. The Rohan Palace has lived through fascinating periods of history, if you’d enjoy finding more about it you can take part in a guided tour offered by the tourist office.
