Port Vieux Beach

07 plage port vieux biarritz 1 poi grand

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Biarritz, The queen of beaches and the beach of kings

We’re now overlooking the pretty cove of Port Vieux. This beach is a natural swimming pool with a Mediterranean vibe that is very popular with families. It’s hard to believe that whales used to be butchered here! From the Middle Ages to the 17th century, Biarritz was a major whaling centre. The largest marine mammal on the blue planet was hunted mainly for its blubber, which produced a high-quality oil used in cosmetics and soaps, but also for industrial lubrication and lighting. Whale blubber has the advantage of burning without producing smoke. As Biarritz lies on the migratory routes of cetaceans, whaling was a major industry for many years.  At the time, Port Vieux was the centre of the city! On this small beach, there were a few huts owned by fishing families who pulled their boats in at low tide to process the whales. Ovens were also built close to the beach to melt lard. This activity gradually declined in the early 17th century, due to the decline in whale populations and the advent of new energy sources such as crude oil. Whaling completely ended in 1690. Today, it is a rare and moving sight to see this majestic marine mammal off the coast. The best time to see them is between March and October, when whales migrate along the Atlantic coast. If you’re there at the right time, I recommend taking part in a specialised boat trip to increase your chances of spotting them. Don’t forget to send us a photo if you manage to catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures!
