The Spree

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Berlin, On the other side of the wall
The Spree, which divides the German capital in two, embodies the tumultuous history of the city it flows through. It was along its banks that the first settlement was founded in the 13th century, and later, it served as a natural border between East and West Berlin. Access to the river was restricted, with the Berlin Wall running along its banks for four kilometers, creating a no man’s land where only boats with special permits could navigate. Many people tragically drowned while trying to escape. After reunification, Berliners rediscovered their river, but it took time for them to recover it. Today, many breweries have sprung up along its shores, as well as scenic promenades. There is even a long artificial beach at Strandbad, a popular spot to cool off if you’re visiting in summer. You may also notice sightseeing boats cruising along the river, offering a pleasant and relaxing way to see the city from a different perspective.
