Pariser Platz

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Berlin, On the other side of the wall
Welcome to Pariser Platz –or “Paris Square” – right in the heart of Berlin. This square commemorates Prussia’s capture of Paris in 1814, which led to Napoleon Bonaparte’s fall. One man’s defeat is another man’s victory. Over the centuries, the square has changed tremendously , especially after the heavy bombings of World War II, which left it in ruins. Paris Square would have to wait until the 1990 reunification of Berlin to be rebuilt. Thus, all the surrounding buildings date from the 1990s, giving the square a consistent appearance. Berlin wanted to create a beautiful space to welcome its visitors. Here you’ll find the US Embassy, the luxurious Hotel Adlon, and several other office buildings and residences. The modern glass building that you see is one of the two buildings of the Berlin Academy of Arts. This cultural institution was founded by Frederick I of Prussia in 1696, originally under the name “Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture”. It is the predecessor of the Berlin University of Arts, and includes six sections, representing the different types of art that exist today. Be sure to check out the temporary exhibitions – there, you’ll also get to enjoy a stunning view of the Brandenburg Gate. On the ground floor you’ll find a café and a bookstore which are both open to the public.
