The beautiful ultra-modern building you see on the other bank is part of the parliamentary complex of the German federal government. Inaugurated in 2003, it was born from a large-scale redevelopment project of the government district known as the Federal Ribbon, launched after German reunification. Its sleek and open architecture reflects the desire for transparency and accessibility to Germany’s democratic values.The walkways connecting the buildings symbolize the continuity between the different branches of government. The building is named the “Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders House” in honor of the German politician and feminist who fought fiercely for women’s rights at the beginning of the 20th century. As well as housing the offices of members of parliament, the building also contains the parliamentary library and scientific services, serving as an important center for research and information on parliamentary activities. Some areas are open to the public, so you can visit if you want to gain a better understanding of how the Bundestag and German politics work. You will also find a memorial dedicated to the Berlin Wall. Certain sections have been reconstructed to mark the former path of the wall and serve as a reminder of the city’s division. Now, continue along the river. On the other side of the promenade, you will see articles of the German constitution engraved on glass panels—another strong symbol of transparency.
