The World Clock

02 world clock berlin 2 poi grand

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Berlin, A symbolic and dynamic capital

The strange clock standing before you is the Urania World Clock. Its rotating structure displays the time in 148 big cities around the world! It was inaugurated in the same year as the Berlin Television Tower. The idea to build a clock in this square came about when the remains of the old Urania Column were found – a weather clock that stood here in 1910. These weather columns were very popular in the early 20th century and showed passersby useful readings such as air pressure, humidity levels, temperature, and weather forecasts.
You won’t be told the temperature with this clock, but it does display the 24 main time zones as well as the cities that use them. It took around a hundred engineers and specialists to design it. The clock represents the universal aspect of time and interconnection between countries. At its top, you can admire a representation of the solar system, which rotates on its axis each minute. Since its creation, the clock has become a popular meeting point and a must-see stop on Alexanderplatz.
